How agile is agile?

Leading a project can be a tough assignment, especially when it goes sideways because expectations were never clearly stated. And you know what? It happens to the best of us. But with agile projects, having everything laid out and crystal clear can be even more of a challenge.

Agile project management is about being flexible, working together and delivering value to the customer through iterative, incremental development. Sounds pretty good, right? But this approach can also make it harder to keep expectations clear, because the project can change all the time.

Sometimes you will get requirements that keep changing as the project progresses. Other times you will work with someone who stresses flexibility so much that you forget what the original goals were. And let's not even start on the challenge of getting stakeholders to agree on what is important!

But don't worry, folks! Just because it can be harder to establish and communicate expectations in agile projects does not mean it is impossible.

Here is what you can do:

Bring your stakeholders in from the start and make sure everyone is involved throughout the project. That way everyone stays in the loop and you can avoid surprises.

Use agile project management tools such as user stories, sprint planning and retrospectives to keep expectations on track and make sure they are clear.

Retrospectives in particular are something many people skip, so don't. Retrospectives are invaluable when it comes to steering the project in the right direction.

Keep checking your expectations and adjust them when needed. Agile projects require a bit of give and take, so don't be afraid to make changes.

Encourage open communication and feedback between your team and your stakeholders. That way everyone gets a say, and any misunderstandings can be sorted out before they grow into bigger issues.

Remember, it is okay to learn from your mistakes. Even when things do not go according to plan, you can always use it as a way to improve yourself and the project. So get out in the sun, take a breath, communicate clearly and get that agile project done like a boss!
